There's a Nail in Your Tire. Here's What to Do.

Here is what actually happens when a nail is in your tread: the nail shaft is sitting inside the channel it created. The rubber around it is compressed slightly against the nail, which slows - and sometimes almost stops - air from escaping around the outside of the shaft. The nail is, in effect, a temporary plug.

The moment you pull the nail out, that plug is gone. The hole is now fully open. If the tire was losing air slowly before, it may now lose it quickly. You want to be in a position to get the tire to a repair shop - not stranded with a fast flat because you removed the one thing slowing the leak.

When in doubt, pull over safely and call for assistance. A tire driven flat, even briefly, can damage the rim and the tire casing beyond what a repair can fix. The cost of that outcome is far higher than a tow or roadside assist call.

The standard repair method for a tread puncture is a patch-plug combination inserted from the inside of the tire after the nail is removed and the damage assessed. Sidewall damage is a different situation. The sidewall is a structural component of the tire - it flexes thousands of times per kilometre and bears the vehicle's load. Patching a sidewall breach cannot restore its structural integrity. A sidewall-damaged tire should be replaced, not repaired.

If the tire was driven flat - even for a short distance - the internal structure may be damaged in ways that are not visible from outside. A reputable tire shop will inspect the interior before confirming repairability.
